Certification Programs & Therapy Training

Certification from organizations like The American Kennel Club (AKC) and Therapy Dog International (TDI) can lead to many new and rewarding opportunities for you and your dog. Good behavior programs, such as AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC), not only acknowledge stellar behavior and responsible dog ownership, but can provide benefits such as insurance discounts, apartment application eligibility, and more. Most importantly, a well-behaved dog can be an active and productive member of your community. At All About My Dog, we proudly train, test and certify dogs for a variety of good behavior programs. We also offer Therapy Dog, Service Dog, and Emotional Support Dog training. Learn more below, or contact barkback@allaboutmydog.com.

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Certification

Every puppy should start off right! In our Puppy Series, we’ll address your all of your questions, including housebreaking, nipping, barking, and crate training, as well as provide the foundation training you and your pup need to build a life-long bond. At the end of each puppy course, upon request, our instructors may administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test, which includes pledges for responsible dog ownership and general and pre-Canine Good Citizen behavior testing. Upon passing the exam, you’ll get an application to send to AKC® for enrollment in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. All dogs under 1 year of age are welcome to participate including purebreds and mixed breeds. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy training is a natural lead in to the AKC® Canine Good Citizen® Program.

AKC Temperament Test (ATT)

While all dogs are good dogs, not all dogs have the same temperament. Temperament is a dog’s natural predisposition to react in a certain way to a stimulus. The AKC Temperament Test is a noncompetitive, pass-fail test that screens for fear, shyness, inability to recover and lack of cooperation. It covers six categories: social, auditory, visual, tactile (touch), proprioceptive (motion), and unexpected stimulus. In order to earn the AKC ATT title, dogs must be 1 year or older, and pass the ATT twice under two different evaluators.

Therapy Dog Training

Pet therapy is one of the most requested complementary therapies for children and adults in need. As a certified pet therapy team, you and your dog can expect to visit nursing homes, hospitals, libraries, schools, and corporate centers—any place where your visit will elicit a smile. At All About My Dog, we’re thrilled to offer training with the specific goal of helping you and your dog obtain your pet therapy certification from a nationally recognized organization.

In our training classes, we will focus on necessary core skills like how to settle your dog in a busy therapy setting: among crowds, during long waits, around d hospital equipment like walkers, canes, and crutches, and through loud noises and unexpected encounters. We’ll reinforce high value “leave it” commands for water and food as well as help your dog learn how to walk with you and gently interact with children and adults. Because we also offer Therapy Dog Services, you and your dog will learn alongside other real life therapy dogs.

Teams that obtain their pet therapy certification may be invited to join the All About My Dog Pet Therapy Team.

If you enjoy volunteering, join us to discover the joy your dog can bring to others, and the amazing bond you’ll create with your beloved pet.

Note: Therapy Dog training is all on-leash.

Service Dog Training and Emotional Support Dog Training

A Service Dog is a dog that provides services to an individual with a disability like pulling a wheelchair, medical alert, PTSD, seizure alert and more. Federal law ensures service dogs have full access to all public places. An Emotional Support Animal is any animal or pet that can provide emotional and therapeutic benefit to those suffering with emotional disability, anxiety or psychiatric disability. Emotional support animals have some rights to public access including the ability to live in housing with “no-pet” policies and flying in the cabin of a plane. Service dog training and emotional support animal training require an extraordinary commitment of time and the determination to complete the process. At All About My Dog, Lisa Rockland offers Service Dog and Emotional Support Dog training on a limited, case-by-case basis.
